Of all the stories we heard while in Spain, I was most impressed by the one about
the overflowing churches in Algeria. Since the government has increased its persecution,
closing churches and putting pastors in prison, worship attendance has increased
as well. An Algerian friend shared that people stand in windows to participate in
church since the buildings are so crowded.
One church in particular has 300 people worshipping. When asked how attendance has
been affected by the persecution, he cited the church of 300 as an example. That
body has more than doubled with some 800 people worshipping now. The significance
of this is hard for us to fully appreciate since these numbers come from a closed
Muslim society.
In the natural, no one can explain what is taking place, but we serve a supernatural
God. I am reminded of Isaiah 55:8,9: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor
are your ways My ways," says the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
In freedom we will enjoy corporate worship this Sunday; would that it be as significant
for us as it is for our brothers and sisters in the persecuted church.
